Indian Folk Wardrobe

Photography by Pranidhi Gupta

The series is a collection of visuals showing the wardrobe of the common Indian Folk.

Here FOLK is not just referred to as a generic English word generally confused with “traditional”
“Folk” is just a loose translation of the Hindi word “लोक”(Lok), meaning “"people in general”.

FOLK here stands for a larger concept of community, a collective of people hailing from a similar geography, background, following a similar lifestyle, belief system and customs. And India being the melting pot of diverse living traditions and cultures gives a perfect background to see and experience diverse people, occupations, clothing, ways of living and a spectrum of daily activities that beautifully co-exist.

Often, the beauty of daily life is ignored by us and becomes rather a mundane scene. The series highlights this "Beauty",
the complex feeling of appreciation, we all find hard to explain, something that soothes us and stays with us.
This is an every evolving collection of visuals bringing together, what is derived from the wardrobe of the common Indian, (the Indian Folk), against a backdrop of what is most familiar and most natural to them. This visual story is a documentation of glimpses of un-noticed energy, from everyday life, told through colors, characters, clothing and places.

"The seen is our everyday,
The unseen breaks the monotony.
The seen-unseen is what we ignore in the everyday,
What we forget to notice,
What we take for granted,
What holds meaning for us, but still goes unacknowledged,
What seems so regular that we forget to take a moment and appreciate it."
